Yesterday the ONLYWATCH auction took place in Geneva and it was inspiring to watch. It’s an “biennial auction of 50 one-off luxury timepieces made by the finest watch manufacturers for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy” ref. from ONLYWATCH
This years edition had a couple of surprises in store. The first one being that Tudor’s submission that was estimated to sell for 5000 CHF achieved over 300k CHF and the most surprising one was that the watch contributed by Patek Philipp broke the record for the most expensive watch.
31.000.000 CHF were payed for one of the most complicated watches ever made by Patek. It’s called the Grandmaster Chime and is the first and only one made in stainless steel. In terms of style it’s not my favorite of the collection, simply being because its a very “special” piece that would probably not get a lot of wrist time, although I really like the salmon dial.
In terms of style I’d like to focus on a different submission namely the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 which was able to achieve over a 1 million CHF – find it HERE
The Audemars Piguet 11.59 is my personal favorite from all the submissions even though when this collection first came out it earned a lot of disrespect and hatred by the watch community but over time it has become a well placed watch among its brothers and sisters at Audemars Piguet.
In particular this specific Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked Only Watch Edition / 26600CR.OO.D002CR.99 was made with a 18K pink gold case and a 18K white gold bezel. The model’s two-tone case really shows off what AP was trying to create with the design of the 11.59. The complexity of the case is simply mesmerizing.
In terms of style this is my favorite watch of the ONLYWATCH collection because I strongly believe that this case and the dial would immensely benefit from a coloured watch strap and anyone could easily pull this watch off on a daily basis.
