I had the chance to try on the Waltz No.1 from Carl Suchy & Söhne for a couple of weeks. If I had to keep it short and sum up my experience in one simple sentence I would have to say: It was hard to give it back!
I love all kind of watches (what a surprise!) and there are so many out there with crazy color schemes and dials. Actually I love that. Creating a new watch is an art for itself and I get that many watch brands want to go for more and try new things. But the more different (and crazy) designs are out there, the more a simple and timeless piece is what a collection really needs.
If I don’t know what to wear, I’ll always go for jeans and shirt mixed with accessories that make my outfit special. It’s something you can wear everyday and never fail. Timeless. And that is what Carl Suchy & Söhne did with their watches.
Simple and clean, easy to wear on an everyday basis and at the same time not boring at all. There are little details that make those watches one of a kind like for example the rotating seconds disc.
The brand was originally founded by Carl Suchy himself in 1822 and together with his sons he became one of the most important watch & clock makers of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Catering it’s watches to the likes of Sigmund Freud and the emperor Franz Joseph I. After a break in 1914 the brand was revived in 2016 and with that the Waltz N°1 was created.
Carl Suchy & Söhne focusses on combining viennese elegance with swiss precision. That is why the watches are produced in Switzerland by none other than Marc Jenni a master watchmaker, former member of the “Académie Horlogère de Créateurs Indépendantes” in Geneva and it takes up to seven months for the Waltz to be completed.
“Waltz N°1” follows an elegant and minimalistic design aesthetic with an emotional twist, a love for seamlessly combining sophisticated materials and a passion for the latest technology. – It says on their website.
The watch itself is very simple, inspired by the 19th century, by viennese culture and artists. Furthermore, it is a watch you would not expect simply because it wears super comfortable despite being 41.5mm in diameter. It’s 9.3mm thick which adds to the wearing comfort on the wrist. The case is made out of steel (there being a variant in gold as well) and the watch has a water-resistance of 30m. The Waltz N°1 is priced at 8.495€.
That being said it’s definitely not a watch you want to go swimming with but sure is a good piece to wear on a daily basis, but it will certainly fit an everyday casual lifestyle. Easily matching jeans and t-shirt as well as suit and tie. A watch that can be taken out for dinner and to work. In my opinion a serious contender to the likes of Omega and Rolex in terms of daily wear.
I was able to test both the white and black dial version of the watch and as I stated in the beginning it was very hard giving them back. My favorite part of the watch being the immensely cool rotating seconds disc – matching the viennese style where seconds don’t count.
